Tips & Tricks
- →On 2016–2019 models, the electric parking brake must be manually retracted by supplying 12V power to the motor connector terminals. A 9V battery can retract the EPB motor but is much slower. For 2020-2022 model instructions, View Guide
- →Clean the EPB connector thoroughly before disconnecting — compressed air or computer duster helps release the locking tab.
- →Use an M8x1.25 bolt with anti-seize to remove stuck rotors instead of hammering, especially if machining them for reuse.
- →Never use petroleum-based grease (wheel bearing, axle, or U-joint grease) on slider pins — it will swell the rubber boots and bushings.
- →Use lithium-based rubber grease (Toyota/Lexus spec) on slider pins; silicone grease is acceptable but OEM grease is preferred.
- →Clean caliper bracket sliders thoroughly — pads must slide in with minimal effort or they won't retract properly and will wear prematurely.
- →After compressing the caliper piston, reseat the rubber boot with a small flat-blade screwdriver to prevent it from rolling and tearing when the pad is installed.
- →Pay attention to pad orientation: the inside pad (piston side) has one white mark, the outside pad has two white marks.
- →Place a lug nut on the hub to hold the rotor in position while installing the caliper bracket.
- →After reassembly, pump the brake pedal several times before starting the vehicle to take up slack from compressed pistons.
- →Check brake fluid level after the job — compressing pistons can cause overflow if the reservoir was previously topped up.
- →There is a small chance of setting a brake system fault code regardless of the EPB retraction method used — if set, it must be cleared with a good quality scan tool.
