Tips & Tricks

  • Always disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent arcing if the wrench contacts the vehicle body.
  • Reconnect the positive terminal first before the negative when reinstalling.
  • Use a vented AGM battery when replacing a hybrid auxiliary battery located inside the vehicle compartment.
  • Do not overtighten the battery hold-down bracket — overtightening can squeeze and deform the battery case.
  • Tighten battery bracket and terminal clamps to approximately 5 ft-lbs or until snug.
  • Ensure the negative terminal clamp is fully seated down on the post before tightening, or it won't grip properly.
  • Leave sliding doors closed before disconnecting the battery to avoid needing reinitialization, or be prepared to manually close them slowly to initialize.
  • After reconnection, initialize the power hatch by closing it slowly by hand.
  • Initialize the backup camera steering lines by turning the steering wheel full lock in each direction if the lines are lost.
  • An ICS warning light or lane keep assist warning after battery replacement can be cleared by driving straight over 40 mph for approximately 5 seconds.
  • After reinstallation, inspect vent hose routing to ensure it is not pinched behind the battery.
  • Apply battery terminal protective spray after reconnection to prevent corrosion.
